Enter Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is a simple guideline that helps you compose your photos effectively. Let’s understand this step-by-step:

Step 1: Forming the grid

Imagine your photo as a 3 * 3 grid. So basically 2 equally spaced vertical and horizontal lines resulting in 9 equal parts like the grid below.

Step 2: Placing the subject

Now, what the Rule of Thirds says is basically to place the main subject of your photo along the grid lines or at their intersection points. So in the photo below for instance, the plant which is the subject is placed along the left most grid line and an intersection point as well.

Step 3: Create the perfect composition

Aligning the subject like this creates more energy and interest in the photo than simply placing the subject at the centre of the photo. To illustrate this look at these two photos side by side. The photo on the left with the rule of thirds applied to it definitely looks more appealing, evokes curiosity and interest in the photo than the one on the right that has the subject right in the centre.

An Important Note:

Now, this is not to say that photos that do not follow the Rule of Thirds are NOT good. The Rule of Thirds is simply a guideline that is helpful, especially when you are getting started. A simple scientific study on selecting the most pleasing rectangles showed that 76% of people liked shapes were the sides where in the ratio which the rule of thirds is based on.

Nevertheless, you can always create interesting compositions by breaking the Rule of Thirds ( and following rule of fourths, fifths and so on) but it gives you a good start point to further explore the composition.

How to apply Rule of Thirds on your iPhone Camera:

For those of you who take your Instagram photos on your iPhone or any other smartphone, you can implement the Rule of thirds easily by switching on the grid on your camera.

To do this on the iPhone, go to Phone Settings >> Photos and Camera >> Grid >> Turn on (As shown below)

Its that simple. So the next time you are shooting photos, make sure to align your subject in a way that aligns it with one of the intersection points or along the grid lines and you’ll be golden.
